Cowell Coffee Shop For The Peoples
About Us
The Cowell Coffee Shop: For the Peoples is a non-transactional, student-run café committed to making healthy and sustainable food accessible to students facing food insecurity. As part of the Center’s student leadership development model, we are committed to hands-on learning for our student leaders while they support food access and security for their peers. The Cowell Coffee Shop collaborations co-create curriculum, workshops, events, and culinary programming designed specifically around advancing a more just and sustainable food system for all. In addition, we partner closely with our Campus Resource Centers with an Equity in Mental Health (EMH) funding project to foster greater belonging and connection at UCSC.
The Center for Agroecology and Colleges, Housing and Educational Services have partnered to transform the first cafe at UCSC, historically minted as the Cowell Coffee Shop, into a non-transactional cafe serving up a mutual aid model of support.
Our Food Sovereignty Model
The Cowell Coffee Shop is committed to fostering a greater understanding of food sovereignty, through cultivating agency for student leaders to grow, prepare, and connect their passion on food to larger issues of economic justice and community power building. We believe all people have the right to healthy, culturally appropriate food, produced in an ecologically sound manner. Our team works to honor a wide range of food ways for students, cooking sustainably with local ingredients, and preparing culturally-relevant meals.
The café is run by student staff members and interns. To apply to our internship offerings, learn more here.
