Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

With Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) you make the choice to support local agriculture in a substantial way. By committing to a season’s worth of produce grown at the UCSC Farm and Garden, you support the Center for Agroecology with a market we can count on and plan for. In exchange, you get produce that is picked fresh for you and quality, nutrition and flavor that is unmatched! We make a point to choose interesting and flavorful varieties not widely available that will expand your range while also consistently providing the staples that you depend on. And by supporting the Center for Agroecology in particular, not only are you supporting a local farm, but you are investing in our mission to advance agroecology and equitable food systems through education, research, extension and public service.

When?

Our 2022 CSA begins June 22 and runs through November 18 (22 weeks).

Where?

Pickups will be Wednesday 12-5 and Friday from 11-3pm at the Cowell Ranch Hay Barn.

What's new this year?

This year we are excited to offer our FREE CHOICE SHARE once again! This means that you will come to our designated CSA produce display and pick out $25 worth of fruit and vegetables each week. We will separate our CSA produce from our Farmstand produce to ensure that we will have ample quantity and diversity for our members no matter what time you pick up. You will also be able to purchase additional produce, flowers and value added products from the Farmstand at a special 10% discount for CSA members only. This will allow you easy access at a discounted price to some specialty items grown in the gardens at smaller quantities. We hope this will allow you to get the most out of your relationship with the farm, by giving you some control over what the share provides.

Note: CSA and Farmstand will be running concurrently in the Hay Barn.

What is the cost?

$580 for the season! This breaks down to about $26 per week ($25 for produce and $1 for administration). Your payments can be made in one lump sum, two payments, or four payments. We accept EBT and have limited income shares available as well. Please fill out the limited income form to apply for a discounted share. Folks who sign up before April 1, 2022 will receive a 5% early bird discount. Enter "CSABIRD" during checkout to receive a discount.

We are strongly committed to equity in the food system. We believe that everyone should have access to local, delicious, nutrient dense, organically grown food regardless of income level and are working to make this a reality.  Please consider partnering with us to support these efforts by donating to support our reduced price CSA shares for folks in our community. Please add "CSA" to the notes section to ensure your donation goes towards the CSA program.

What's in a share?

We are lucky to live in an incredible climate for fruit and vegetable production! As the season unfolds and the farm warms up we aim to provide as many high quality, seasonally appropriate crops as possible. A weekly newsletter keeps you informed about Center for Agroecology speakers, events and workshops and provides recipes that accompany the produce offerings.

This winter/spring has been quite warm and dry so we expect to have ample produce and diversity early on. Also, we thought you might like to know that we doubled our strawberry planting this winter so we should have plenty of berries throughout the season.

FAQ

Can I take $20 worth of produce one week and then $30 worth of produce the next?

Unfortunately, not. Your share value stays the same from week to week and does not transfer. There is always the option to purchase more from the stand at the 10% discount, but our base price for the week for CSA members is $26.

Can I take anything I want?

For the most part YES! We will place limits on certain crops (specifically fruit) to make sure that there is enough to go around, but you can generally take any mix of crops from the CSA display. If you want 9 bunches of carrots and 2 baskets of strawberries, go right ahead! You also have the option to pay more for anything extra from the Farmstand at 10% discount.

What if I go on vacation?

If you go on vacation we ask that you find a friend or family member to pick up your share. We don’t pause memberships, but are always happy to donate it for you.

What if I forget to pick up?

To ensure that we have enough produce for all of our customers, we ask that you choose a pick-up day and stick with it. That said, if you forget to pick up on your day, you are welcome to pick up on our other pick up day, on occasion. No need to let us know until you get to the stand. Just show up, we got you!

Do you accept EBT?

Yes! Choose that option on your form and we will contact you to set up payment.
