2021 Fall Harvest Week

Harvest Week 2021 will be a weeklong series of fun in-person and virtual activities for the UCSC student community. A collaboration between the Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS), Food Systems Working Group (FSWG), Cowell Coffee Shop, Redwood Free Market and SUA Pantry, Harvest Week will offer opportunities for students to connect with each other and with the campus food system.

    Tuesday, October 12

    CASFS Farm Tour and Tasting

    11:45am-1:00pm at the UCSC Farm

    Tour the 30-acre UCSC organic farm, where students grow fruits and vegetables for campus food pantries, produce pop-ups and the Cowell Coffee Shop. During this time of year there are tomatoes, squash, kale, beans, carrots, beets, apples, strawberries, and more! Participants can sample some of these fruits and veggies. Sign up>>

    CASFS Farm Salsa Fresca U-Pick

    1:30pm at the UCSC Farm

    Join CASFS student staff on the farm to harvest tomatoes, onions, peppers, and cilantro to bring to the Cowell Coffee Shop, where students will turn it into a delicious salsa fresca for the grand-reopening on Thursday afternoon! Sign up>>

    Cowell Coffee Shop: Meal Kit Pickup for Apple Pie Instagram Contest

    Pick up ingredients between 10am and 3pm at the Cowell Coffee Shop

    The Cowell Coffee Shop will be offering an Apple Pie Meal Kit for this year’s Harvest Week! Each meal kit will include the ingredients necessary to make apple pie, with a vegan option available to those who are interested. We will also be hosting an apple pie competition on the Cowell Coffee Shop Instagram page! The first place winner as well as two runners-up will receive farmers' market tokens. Sign up>>

    Sowing Seeds of Remebrance

    3:30pm-4:30pm at the Packing Shed on the Farm

    Join the UCSC Demeter Seed Library and PICA (Program in Community Agroecology) in creating seed bombs/earth dumplings. Sign up>>

    Produce Pop-Up Grand Re-Opening

    12pm-5pm at Bay Tree Plaza (in front of the book store)

    Low-cost farmstand with organic produce grown by students at the CASFS Farm; the Produce Pop-Up is part of the UCSC Basic Needs initiative and is open to all!

    Real Food Tasting Event

    3:00pm-4:30pm at the Rachel Carson College Plaza

    Join the UCSC Real Food Team working on advancing a more just and sustainable campus food system. The team will be featuring FREE organic and union/fair trade seasonal tastings outside of the Redwood Free Market. Come get a taste for changing your food system!

    4:30pm-6:30pm at the Redwood Free Market (at the Rachel Carson College Cafe)

    Come visit the Redwood Free Market (formally Slug Support Food pantry) at their new location! Come by, learn about Basic Needs and the Redwood Free Market—choice-based, no limits food pantry—grab some groceries, check out out tables set up by campus partners.

    Pumpkin Harvest and Painting

    12:00pm-3:00pm, Cowell College Commons Plaza

    Come and decorate an organic pumpkin from the UCSC farm! We’ll have paints and markers and an opportunity to submit a photo of your creation to an Instagram contest. We won’t have knives on site, but feel free to take your pumpkins home to carve/decorate further yourself and you can also enter remotely to participate in the instagram contest! Entries will be voted on by the masses & prizes will be awarded in farmers’ market tokens to get more fresh and seasonal food in your belly.     Cowell Coffee Shop Grand Re-opening

    4:30pm-6:00pm at the Cowell Coffee Shop (at Cowell College)

    A Basic Needs Cafe For the Peoples! Join us for ribbon-cutting by garden shear, farm-fresh salads dispensed by a robot (the future is now), the Farm-to-Table U-Pick special of Salsa Fresca, and Squash Tamales! Also featuring: a CalFresh information and registration table, the Demeter Seed Library with open-pollinated heirloom seeds for you to take home, pumpkin painting, and the announcement of the brand-new Foodways Fund to invest in students transforming the campus food system!
