    This session with instructor Orin Martin will focus on fruit tree care and management, specifically for small growers looking to establish and/or care for their fruit trees at their farms using organic methods. Although we will be demonstrating on a garden scale, the techniques and methods are field and farm scale applicable.

    Roots So Deep film screening

    Wednesday, February 28, 5-9pm at the Cowell Ranch Hay Barn
    The free event will showcase two episodes of the new 4-part series, Roots So Deep (you can see the devil down there), a documentary that explores the potential for cattle to help save us from catastrophic climate change. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with director Peter Byck.

    Fruit Tree Grafting for the Home Gardener and Small-Scale Grower

    Learn to graft fruit trees and go home with one! Join Sharon Zo for this hands-on workshop at the Hay Barn. Sharon will cover the basics of rootstocks and scion selection, the importance of a sharp, quality grafting knife, safe use of such a knife, timing, and how to put the stock & scion together for best success with your graft.

    UCSC Farm Nature Walk

    Saturday, March 23, 9:30am-12pm at the UCSC Farm
    During this free event, we'll discuss the wildlife, plant life, and ecosystems of the Santa Cruz Mountains and agricultural systems alike as we go on a stroll through the UCSC Farm. We’ll spend time bird watching, investigating signs for critters, and looking at agroecological practices that enhance biodiversity on the farm, such as barn owl boxes - which we will look at and discuss together.

    Led by our own experienced rose grower and organic gardening instructor Orin Martin, this class will be a lively discussion on growing roses in the home garden, appropriate whether you intend to grow one, 10, or 100 roses. For while scale matters, the basics are the same.
